Seoul meets Berlin
Our school has already had several encounters with South Korea through the Korean club or project week. On a Sunday during the summer holidays, a unique opportunity arose for me and four other students, as some students from Duksu High School in Seoul were visiting Berlin.
At their request to try traditional German cuisine, we met at Gendarmenmarkt and went to the restaurant Erdinger. There, several traditional dishes such as roast pork, currywurst, veal schnitzel and „Klöße“ were tasted.
From the Koreans, we received a fan on which a picture from the Joseon Dynasty was depicted. In return, we gave them a variety of typical German sweets.
Cultural differences and similarities were compared
The communication among us took place mainly in English. Despite some language difficulties, there were wonderful conversations. Cultural differences and similarities were compared, hobbies, interests, and experiences were shared, recommendations were given, and contact details were exchanged. I even taught some girls how to introduce themselves in German and was able to impress them at the same time with my basic knowledge of the Korean language.
Overall, it was simply a successful and exciting evening, and I am very grateful to Mrs. Choi-Bauer, Mrs. Sandfuchs and Duksu High School for this opportunity.
